In February 2018 our five-year-old daughter Finlay was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
At the time of Finlay’s diagnosis, her mother and I knew little about diabetes; it was a time of fear, anxiety and attempting to comprehend what was happening to our little girl, who was very ill at the time and required immediate treatment.
Thanks to incredible support from Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital and Diabetes Australia, we soon learnt to cope with and manage Finlay’s illness.
For the past 12-months, our brave little Finlay has demonstrated to us that through courage and determination, anything is possible.
Through this campaign I set out to help raise awareness and funding for research for diabetes.
I am something of an adventurer, having taken part in many challenges including, most recently, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race (2015 – 2016); Mt Fuji climb, Japan (June 2018); Kokoda Trail Trek, Papua New Guinea (September 2018), and marathons and runs.
For some time I have also been planning to climb what is known collectively as the “Seven Summits” – the highest mountain peaks on each of the seven continents.
I plan to climb the 7 Summits over the next three years, self-funding all climbs. Further I’ll also complete 7 full marathons – which together make up our 7×7 Challenge!
Given the vital work of Diabetes Australia and the International Diabetes Federation, I hope that this 7×7 Challenge, may, through fundraising, sponsorship, branding and media exposure, assist in some way in bringing about more public awareness of a condition that I understand affects more than 370 million people worldwide.
Follow the 7×7 Challenge, contribute, if you can and let’s share the Journey together!
